45,000 participants took part in the study which was conducted by the health and diet specialists at the University of Oxford. Approximately 34 percent of these participants in the study were strict vegetarians. (In this particular study, a vegetarian diet was defined as an individual who has abstained to eat meat and fish).
Those who have participated in the study were followed for more than 10 years, as the researchers have collected information on their food choices, the habits of exercise, the consumption of alcohol and other variables which could potentially have an impact on the risk of heart disease.
The researchers who conducted the study found that, even after taking into account the other factors, the study participants who have followed the strict vegetarians were significantly less likely to develop or succumb to heart disease.
Francesca Crowe, Ph.d., of the University of Oxford, was the main author of the study. In a statement, she said, "the major part of the difference in risk is most likely caused by the effects both on the cholesterol as well as blood pressure. "In his statement, she added, "This shows the important role of diet in the prevention of cardiovascular disease."
The research carried out by experts from the University of Oxford has also revealed that the participants in the study, which has followed a strict vegetarian diet tended to have a body mass index of less than that those who have not been vegetarian, and they were less likely to suffer from diabetes as well.
More benefits of a vegetarian diet
this more recent study was one of the largest studies ever conducted to examine the cardiovascular benefits of follow a vegetarian diet; however, it is not exactly a newsflash that a regime without meat is associated with a multitude of benefits for the health.
For example, another study which has been carried out recently, followed approximately 37,000 adults and have found that by consuming at least a vegetarian meal each day, you can reduce your risk of dying of cancer by approximately 20 %.
